Background

Top researchers at of the company wrote a paper and a new kernel module for a scalable multi-tenant network architecture for virtualized datacenters. The technology was to be integrated into OpenStack in time for a major technology conference and to be presented to the CEO.  And if the POC was a success, it will be send to production as an official company service.

OpenStack cluster needed to be standup, code understood and modified and extended for the company's network virtualization packet encapsulation technology.

The issue

OpenStack was just released to the public in the form of open-source code by NASA.  The network RnD team of the company were network protocol and system-level experts. They do not have sufficient background in Python, database, or software development lifecycle.

The solution 

Omar scoped up the requirement and got up to speed quickly on the technology used. He reversed engineered OpenStack Nova, Keystone, and Quantum projects and successfully stood up the OpenStack cluster. He advised on the design and integration and developed the cloud network controller. 

The result

• Three different divisions of the multinational company benefited from the engineering work done by Omar at HP Labs. 

• Solution was successfully demonstrated and integrated with OpenStack and presented to the CEO of the company.

• The success of the solution's integration with OpenStack resulted in it being taken to production and announced to the public.

• Many enhancement and bug fixes was contributed to OpenStack open source project.
